The Last Mile Bill
The last mile bill: What is it?
Updated: 11 Apr 2023
The Last Mile Bill is a measure to be adopted by the government to regulate last mile deliveries. Find out more in this blog and how Columat and its smart solutions can improve it:
Columat is the logistics solution that automates parcel deliveries and pickups through smart lockers, but more importantly, it is the last mile law solution.
The last mile is the final stage in the logistics process of delivering a package.
This process covers the carrier's journey from the last logistics warehouse to the final recipient of the parcel.
The main objective of this law is to reduce the flow of vehicles used for parcel delivery. In addition, the aim is to reduce the pollution caused by these vehicles.
Did you know that last-mile deliveries account for 50% of the cost of deliveries in cities? This alarming statistic underlines the importance of installing smart lockers as pick-up points to reduce logistics costs.
The following are some of the points of the proposal:
- Delimit last mile distribution areas. Municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants will have to graphically delimit their last mile distribution areas, which cannot exceed one kilometer between the limits of each one.
- Each area should have a last mile distribution center and each center should have a collection point.
- The law indicates that trips must be made on foot, with personal mobility vehicles or with hybrid or electric vehicles in municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants.
We can see, more and more, the importance of smart collection points. They are the future if we want to achieve Smart Cities. With Columat's smart lockers, both the pollution problems caused by today's last mile logistics and the unnecessary routes carried out by carriers to deliver parcels house to house are reduced.
